GRIEG LODGE SCHOLARSHIP FUND  APPLICATION - 2026 

Grieg Lodge Scholarship Fund ("GLSF") was founded, in part, to "develop the pursuit of the intellect and education in all areas of life by providing scholarship grants, to encourage studies of the cultures of Norway and the United States, and for the advancement of literary, musical, artistic and historical creativity." 

GLSF gives a minimum of three academic scholarships of at least $2,000 per year. Typically, more are given. For example, in 2025, ten scholarships were awarded!

APPLICATION ELIGIBILITY

  • Eligibility is limited to students whose home address is in:  Multnomah, Clackamas, Clatsop, Columbia, Washington and Yamhill Counties in Oregon, or Clark County in Washington. 

  • Age requirement minimum: High school seniors 

  • Need not be affiliated with Grieg Lodge. Preference will be given to applicants with a connection to Nordic (Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, Swedish and Finnish) heritage, culture and/or activities.

  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Effective 6/24/2023, applications will no longer be accepted from previous GLSF Scholarship winners in order to make scholarships available to those who have not yet received a GLSF Scholarship. 

  • Incomplete or late applications will not be included in the selection process. Additional materials such as photographs and resumes will not be considered.

GETTING READY: APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS - PERSONAL INFORMATION

This section of the application is straightforward. You’ll be asked to provide your name, address, email, phone number, and other basic details. Please double-check that all information is accurate, as this is how we will contact you.

You will also be asked to list your references and their contact information. Having this information ready before you start will make completing your application faster and smoother.

GETTING READY: THE ESSAY

The essay should be typed, double-spaced, and checked for grammer and spelling. This will be submitted as a PDF attachment as you complete the online Application form.

In 800 words or less cover the following topics

(Part 1-3):

Part 1: 

Describe your Nordic (Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic and Swedish) background and participation in:

  • Traditions

  • Nordic Activities

Part 2: 

Describe your interest and activities:

  • School

  • Community

  • Personal

Part 3:

Describe your goals:

  • Personal

  • Education

  • Professional/Vocational

Part 4: 

In 200 words or less cover the following topics:

Throughout history, Norway has influenced the world through innovation, diplomacy, culture,  arts, and sustainability. Choose the contribution you believe has had — or will continue to have — the greatest global impact. Describe this contribution, explain its significance, and reflect on how understanding it might help address challenges facing the world today and tomorrow. 

GETTING READY: TRANSCRIPTS

An official transcript from your current educational institution is required to complete your application. Please contact your school’s records or registrar’s office well in advance, as transcript processing may take several weeks. Early preparation will help ensure timely submission.

Your transcript should be uploaded as a PDF attachment when you complete the online application form.

If your school transmits transcripts electronically through a secure portal, you will have the opportunity to provide those details within the application form.

GETTING READY: REFERENCES

Each person you list as a reference on your Information Form must complete an Official Recommendation Form and submit a current Letter of Recommendation.

APPLICATION SUBMITTED: NOW WHAT HAPPENS?

Applicants chosen to receive an Academic Scholarship with be notified by March 31, 2026.

Winners should plan to attend the Scholarship Award Ceremony at the Grieg Lodge Birthday Brunch, Sunday, April 12, 2026 at Norse Hall. 

The decision of the Selection Committee, on behalf of the Grieg Lodge Scholarship Fund Board of Directors, is final. 

Scholarship awards will be made to the designated institution on behalf of the award recipient after the GLSF received proof of enrollment beginning August 15, 2026.
